Erroneous Recording of Maternal Heart Rate as Fetal Heart Rate During Second Stage of Labour: Isn’t it Time to Stop this?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Electronic Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) monitoring is recommended to assess fetal well-being during labour in high risk pregnancies. This Cardiotocograph (CTG) relies on the ultrasound technology with limitation of signal loss 15% 40% cases [1]. In earlier versions these CTG monitors, heart tracings were generally reasonable quality many artefacts and some degree occasional large noise. Subsequent models improved by modulation autocorrelation. Although, new methodologies processing have reduced loss, issues inadvertent maternal rate as inaccurate evaluations baseline (i.e. doubling or halving) continue pose difficulties intrapartum monitoring.

Fetal Heart Rate Classification: First vs. Second Stage of Labor
Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) is clinically used for early detection of fetal acidosis. Despite a marked interest in automatic detection procedures, FHR analysis remains a challenging signal processing task, receiving considerable research attention. Among other difficulties, the two stages of labor (dilation and active pushing) produce very different FHR dynamics. Most research efforts, however, have...
متن کاملFetal Heart Rate Interpretation in the Second Stage of Labour: Pearls and Pitfalls
It is vital to determine whether a fetus is showing a normal physiological response to the stress of labour or if the fetus is exposed to intrapartum hypoxia to ensure timely and appropriate management. Failure to interpret fetal heart rate correctly during second stage of labour may lead to increased maternal and neonatal morbidity due to an unnecessary caesarean section or an instrumental vag...
متن کاملAbrupt fall in the fetal heart rate during labour.
Cardiotocograms of 6044 patients in labour were examined for evidence of an abrupt fall in the fetal heart 50 beats within 3 minutes, without a demonstration of signs of recovery in the following 2 minutes. Only 9 instances could be found -- an incidence of 0,15%. Umbilical cord entanglement possibly played a role in 6 of these instances, and 2 of the infants concerned were stillborn. Intra-ute...
متن کاملImprovements in fetal heart rate analysis by the removal of maternal-fetal heart rate ambiguities
BACKGROUND Misinterpretation of the maternal heart rate (MHR) as fetal may lead to significant errors in fetal heart rate (FHR) interpretation. In this study we hypothesized that the removal of these MHR-FHR ambiguities would improve FHR analysis during the final hour of labor. METHODS Sixty-one MHR and FHR recordings were simultaneously acquired in the final hour of labor. Removal of MHR-FHR...
متن کاملMaternal Heart Rate Variability during the First Stage of Labor
Labor necessitates continuous adjustments of cardiac autonomic reflexes by alternate activation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The division of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that predominates during the first stage of labor is unclear and needs to be further investigated. The study aimed to compare heart rate variability (HRV) in pregnant women in the third trimeste...
